The time frame….beginning as soon as one year?!? This pathologizing of grief…treating it as though it is something to be cured or gotten over…misses important points. If you had looked at me and my grieving in the first two and a half years, you might have diagnosed me as ‘mentally ill by your standards. The first two years are brutal for some of us. At four years I finally wake in the morning and my husband is not the first thought in my mind. So you would have had me in therapy instead of providing me community support and witnessing. Keeping grief as the purview of ‘the-rapists’ is cruel. Public education on allowing grief to be what it is…a normal response….encouraging our culture to embrace grief recognition and ritual…out of the hands of specialists who think of us as broken…that would be a better use of your energies and time. Those people who are not functional are dealing with old wounds and or traumas that are triggered by loss. It is not necessary to turn grief into a diagnosis. Please stop telling us that we are sick if we are still longing and suffering as soon as one year! And in the end…as stated by your first speaker…it is about money isn’t it? Educate our culture. Don’t make grief a sickness!!

There wasn't a lot of focus on the role of family and friends in supporting a loved one with SUD. I didn't find this clip helpful whatsoever in that regard. I think "experts" should take a step back and be less "expert" and make sure your discussion aligns with the title of your video. In addition, I find it problematic when any mental health professional offers "advice". I think advice is a bad thing and there is a ton of literature that supports this position. In any case, this video is only 13 minutes long which might have an impact on what the professionals were able to cover.
